Navigating Homeschooling

And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children... ― Deuteronomy 6:6-7

Educating the Heart, Soul, and Mind

No life can be more fulfilled than a life submitted to God.

Who Am I?

I am a Pastor’s wife, author, and second-generation homeschooler, and most important, I’m a child of the King. In 2003, I graduated from West Coast Baptist College with a BA in Secondary Education. My views on homeschooling and education are a reflection of a Biblical worldview, but I believe that what I share can be beneficial to homeschoolers of all backgrounds. Like all homeschoolers, I juggle a wide range of responsibilities along with homeschooling my four children. I am not perfect, infallible, or the ultimate authority on homeschooling. However, I have the advantage of being homeschooled since first grade, which is what I mean by “second-generation.” I can look back on what I experienced as a homeschooled child to help me better homeschool my own children. That is not to say I’m “better,” but simply have a unique perspective, being able to learn from my mom’s “mistakes.” To her credit, she had a much harder job. She was a pioneer, and I’m reaping the benefits of territory she already conquered. What she has given me, I hope to pass down to others who are navigating the sometimes murky waters of homeschooling for the first time.

A ridiculous bill. Treating parents as if they were the enemy instead of the most important people in a child’s life is wrong.Update on H.B. 5468: Yesterday, Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont signed this terrible bill into law, marking a notable turning point in homeschool freedom: hslda.org/post/hb-5468 H.B. 5468 profoundly transforms Connecticut from a state where parents had significant freedom, to the only state that imposes mandatory background checks by DCFS on every parent before they can homeschool. Not after evidence of abuse. Not in response to a specific concern. But as a condition of carrying out a basic responsibility of parenthood—choosing the best education for your child. The signing of H.B. 5468 marks the first regression of homeschool freedom in the modern homeschool movement. While we are deeply disappointed by this legislation, the battle is not over. We have been working hand-in hand with our allies Connecticut to oppose this bill since it was introduced and will continue to pursue appropriate legal action now that it has been signed into law.Opponents of homeschool freedom in other states could certainly be emboldened by Connecticut, and redouble their attempts to add layers of regulation, restriction and bureaucracy to homeschooling families. When HSLDA was founded over 40 years ago, homeschooling was illegal in most of the nation. Parents were regularly threatened with arrest, and children were threatened with removal from the safety of their homes and forced enrollment in public schools. This is a sober reminder that freedom cannot be taken for granted. While H.B. 5468 is a setback, our work—in partnership with many of you—continues. We remain committed to standing beside courageous parents in defense of homeschool freedom for generations to come. ... See MoreSee Less
